The 29-year-old Osgood has played mostly on special teams since breaking into the NFL as an undrafted player in 2003 with San Diego. He's spent the past six seasons with the Chargers and has 33 receptions for 647 yards with four touchdowns.

Osgood is a three-time Pro Bowl selection.

Grapefruit League action starts Wednesday, but Johnson, penciled in as the No. 2 starter, hasn't even thrown off a mound at full speed since September. He's experienced some soreness in his right forearm.
